Provenance
The Tony Banks Collection, by whom offered
The Tony Banks Collection: Political art and memorabilia belonging to the late Lord Stratford, Bonhams, 3 May 2007, 3 May 2007, lot 2A, where purchased by the present owner.

Described as 'one of the greatest politicians in British history' (H.T. Dickinson), Robert Walpole (1676-1745) is generally regarded as the de facto first Prime Minister of Great Britain. His uninterrupted 20 years in the role during the reigns of George I and George II also grants him the accolade of the country's longest-serving prime minister.

His political career began in 1701 when he won the seat as MP for Castle Rising, which had previously been his father's seat. From here he ascended and descended the ranks of parliament and the Commons (including a sixth-month stint in the Tower of London in 1712) before ultimately being appointed, in 1721, Lord of the Treasury, Chancellor of the Exchequer, and Leader of the Commons, and thus effectively prime minister, until 1742.

The present work is after Stephen Slaughter's original portrait, offered at Sotheby's, London, 24 September 2023, lot 185.
