The American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR) was founded by actress Elizabeth Taylor in 1985, following the AIDS-related death of her friend and fellow actor, Rock Hudson.
After ten years of running the foundation, Taylor gave the reins to actress Sharon Stone, who increased the organisation's visibility by forging relationships in the fashion world.
On a trip to Paris in 1996, Stone met her friend and deputy CEO of Louis Vuitton, Jean-Marc Loubier, at the LV Museum in Asnières. It was there that the actress expressed a desire for a vanity case that was both practical and luxurious. In response, Loubier challenged her to design one, and she agreed.
Stone worked tirelessly to create an original model, reflecting the craftsmanship she had seen in Asnières, to be labelled, 'Designed by Sharon Stone', to benefit amfAR.
In 2000, Venice International Film Festival and Louis Vuitton launched Cinema Against AIDS Venice; Sharon Stone emceed the amfAR auction sale, and unveiled her new amfAR One vanity case. Three examples were produced that year; one was gifted to her, the second was placed in the Louis Vuitton Museum, and the third that was auctioned off sold to Mario Bernard for $16,000.
This vanity case has become a collector's item and is recognised in the '100 Legendary Trunks' book, published by Louis Vuitton.
