Lot Essay
Maurits Cornelis Escher created some of the most thought-provoking compositions in printmaking history. Escher was a prolific printmaker; throughout his career, he produced 448 lithographs, woodcuts, and wood engravings. The world-renowned artist had a fascination for perspective, architecture, and mathematics. One of the most striking examples is this lithograph titled Belvedere from 1958. The title comes from the Latin word for 'beautiful view' and was used to describe an architectural structure positioned to best take advantage of a scenic overlook. This work on paper depicts one of Escher's iconic paradoxical structures with a man seated in the foreground holding an impossible cube.
