N.B.
Carl Efraim Wallin was born on a farm in Sweden and emigrated to the United States in 1902. He first settled in Denver at Reed's Art School before moving to Chicago in 1904 to study at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Wallin exhibited his work at the Art Institute of Chicago's annual exhibitions, at Swedish American Art Association, and at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, among other places. He was best known for his subdued, almost fantastical landscapes that incorporated imaginative, dreamy elements into familiar natural scenes. A 1935 newspaper critic noted that "Many of his paintings are beautiful, some are merely odd. Nearly all possess charm" (Eleanor Jewett, Chicago Tribune, March 31, 1935). The present work embodies the meditative stillness and sense of unreality that suffuses Wallin's best-known works. There is a hypnotic element to the linearity of the clouds and the cliff face, compounded by the ghost-like vagueness of the figure overlooking the sea.
