TWO LACQUER KŌGŌ (INCENSE CONTAINERS)
Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th century
The first rectangular, with a domed inrōbuta (flush-fitting) lid decorated in gold takamaki-e, hiramaki-e, and inlays of iridescent shell with blossoming chrysanthemums on a bright kinji ground, the interior nashiji, the rims silvered metal, with an unassociated wood storage box;
The second in the form of two overlapping fans decorated in gold takamaki-e, hiramaki-e, and nashiji with chrysanthemums and maple leaves afloat on a stream, and floral and phoenix designs, the handle of one fan in applied horn, the sides and the interior hirame
3 1/8 x 2 3/8 x 1 1/2in (7.9 x 6 x 3.8cm); 4 x 2 1/2 x 7/8in (10.2 x 6.3 x 2.2cm) (2).
