OVERALL CONDITION: These twelve gelatin silver prints, each trimmed to the image, are in generally very good to excellent condition. Additional condition notes are as follows:
'Jacob Epstein, Hyde Park Gate, London', 1934
Titled, numbered 'XXIII.F.29', and dated 'May 28, 1934' in ink and the photographer's typed reproduction rights/credit on the reverse. Condition: Generally excellent. Some very faint silvering and mottling in the upper portion above the sitter's head, visible only in raking light. On the reverse, '66-3-137c (dup)' is written in an unidentified hand in pencil. 9 x 8 in.
'Fernand Leger', 1936
Titled, numbered 'VII J.10', and dated 'Feb 17, 36' in ink and the photographer's reproduction rights stamp on the reverse. Condition: Generally excellent. Upon examination under raking light, sharp creases are visible at the upper and lower edges, and to the right of the sitter's head which do not appear to break the emulsion. There are a few small matte areas of indeterminate nature which are visible only in raking light. On the reverse, '66-3-259b (dup)' is written in an unidentified hand in pencil. 10 x 8 in.
'Ethel Waters', 1938
The photographer's blindstamp on the image, titled in ink, numbered 'X:0' in pencil and the photographer's typed reproduction rights/credit on the reverse. Condition: Generally excellent, some faint silvering is visible along the left edge and a tiny abrasion is visible at the upper right corner. On the reverse, '63' is written in an unidentified hand in pencil. 10 x 8 in.
'Ethel Waters as Hagar in Mamba's Daughters', 1939
Titled, numbered 'XI.O.I', and dated 'February 19, 1939' in ink and the photographer's typed reproduction rights/credit on the reverse. Condition: Generally very good, in raking light: a single, one-inch sharp crease to the right of the sitter's ear and a crescent-shaped sharp crease near the right edge, both of which may break the emulsion; some minor soiling; some tiny glossy droplets of unknown origin; and a few tiny linear impressions overall, which do not appear to break the emulsion. 13 ½ x 9 in.
'Marc Chagall', 1941
Titled, numbered 'XXI V.17', and dated 'July 4, 1941' in pencil and the photographer's reproduction rights stamp on the reverse. Condition: Generally excellent. Upon examination under raking light, the following are visible: a tiny, linear, raised area on the sitter's neck; a one-inch sharp crease in the lower right quadrant; and scattered soft creases, primarily at the right edge, none of which appears to break the emulsion. 10 x 7 1/8 in.
'Rufino Tamayo', 1945
Titled, numbered 'XVI BB.15', and dated 'December 27, 1945' in ink and the photographer's typed reproduction rights/credit on the reverse. Condition: Generally excellent. On the reverse, '66-3-412b (dup)' is written in an unidentified hand in pencil. 10 x 7 7/8 in.
'Alexander Calder', 1947
Titled, numbered 'IX DD.3', and dated 'July 10, 47' in pencil and the photographer's typed reproduction rights/credit on the reverse. Condition: Generally very good. There is a tiny loss in the upper portion of the image which has been filled in. Upon examination under raking light, a few soft handling creases are visible overall. On the reverse, there are three adhesive remnants at the upper edge, and minor soiling overall. 10 x 7 ¼ in.
'Marie Laurencin, Paris', 1949
Titled, numbered 'XXI 993', and dated 'Oct 5, '49' in pencil and the photographer's typed reproduction rights/credit on the reverse. Condition: Generally excellent, a few tiny, sharp creases are visible across the lower right corner which may break the emulsion. On the reverse, '66-3-254 c dup' is written in an unidentified hand in pencil. 6 7/8 x 4 ¾ in.
'Jean Cocteau – Paris', 1949
Titled, numbered 'II ng.10', and dated 'Oct. 14-'49' in pencil and the photographer's typed reproduction rights/credit on the reverse. Condition: Generally excellent. Upon examination under raking light, two small, sharp creases are visible in the lower portion of the image, which do not appear to break the emulsion. On the reverse, '66-3-84a (dup)' is written in an unidentified hand in pencil. There are two tape remnants at the upper edge, some minor soiling along the edges, and a tiny abrasion at the lower edge. The photographer's signature is very lightly smudged. 9 ½ x 7 ¾ in.
'Clyde Maloney', 1960
The photographer's blindstamp on the image, titled, numbered 'XV RR.13', and dated 'Sept. 21, 1960' in ink and the photographer's typed reproduction rights/credit on the reverse. Condition: Generally very good. Upon examination under raking light, sharp creases are visible across the lower two corners, which appear to break the emulsion. There is some discoloration in the center portion of the image. 10 x 7 ½ in.
'James Lynn', 1960
The photographer's blindstamp on the image, titled, numbered 'X RR.12', and dated 'April 6, 1960' in ink and the photographer's typed reproduction rights/credit on the reverse. Condition: Generally very good. Upon examination under raking light, the following are visible: sharp creases across the lower right and upper left corners, which appear to break the emulsion; two linear impressions on either side of the sitter; a crescent-shaped, soft crease in the upper right quadrant; a small deposit of original retouching on the sitter's face; and some mild scuffing in the dark area. 10 x 8 in.
'Chaim Gross', 1963
Titled in pencil, numbered 'V.OO.8', and dated 'May 14, 1963' in ink and the photographer's typed reproduction rights/credit on the reverse. Condition: Generally very good. There is a tiny loss in the lower left quadrant which has been filled in. Upon examination under raking light, two thumbnail-shaped impressions are visible in the center portion of the image. On the reverse, '66-3-178' is written in an unidentified hand in pencil. 10 x 7 1/8 in.
