TWO SATSUMA VASES

Meiji (1868-1912) or Taisho (1912-1926) era, circa 1900
Each decorated in polychrome enamels and gilt on a clear, crackled glaze, the first of baluster form and decorated with two panels containing scenes of samurai about to take leave of a battle encampment, and townspeople enjoying a lakeside outing, the surrounding areas painted with crane roundels, open and closed fans and floral scrolls, signed Kido; the second, a small bottle vase decorated with panels containing a samurai and his retainers, and a gathering of immortals, the surrounding area painted with floral and geometric roundels, inscribed Satsuma and with the mark of the Shimazu family (2)
