With tapering fullered blade with etched foliate decoration including crowned royal arms between regimental badges of the Royal Engineers along one side, and along the other with maker's details and the presentation inscription 'PRESENTED TO GENTLEMAN CADET LIONEL G. THOMAS ON OBTAINING HIS COMMISSION FROM THE ROYAL MILITARY ACADEMY FOR EXEMPLARY CONDUCT WHILST AT THAT INSTITUTION', steel hilt pierced with crowned 'GRV' cypher and foliage, chequered back-piece, and fishskin-covered grip bound with copper wire, in original plated steel scabbard with two rings for suspension

Captain Lionel George Thomas (1903-1936) was Gentleman Cadet at the Royal Military Academy between 1921 1923, and was commissioned into the Royal Engineers later that year. He was promoted Lieutenant in 1925, served in Egypt in 1932, and promoted Captain in 1934. At the time of his death he was Instructor at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich
