An Ottoman Yataghan
19th Century

With slightly recurved single-edged blade engraved with a decorative design of foliage along the back on each side of the forte, one side enclosing a panel deeply struck with a bladesmith's mark and engraved with a pseudo-inscription in thuluth, a shaped silver mount cast and chased with a scallop shell and foliage on each side, and silver grip with 'eared' pommel decorated with vertical bands en suite within roped borders, in original wooden scabbard covered in leather (scuffed) with deep silver locket and chape each elaborately embossed and chased with foliage and c-scrolls, the former involving the Lion of St. Mark on each side, and pierced around the top, the latter involving buildings and a martial trophy, foliate suspension loop, and monster-head terminal (repaired)
