A Full Armour In German 'Maximillian' Early 16th Century Style
19th Century

Of bright steel, comprising close-helmet with two-piece skull with slender medial ridge and characteristic fluting, hinged cheek-pieces shaped to the chin and secured by a pin-catch at the front and pierced with an arrangement of circular holes over each ear, the lower edges turned to engage with the upper border of the gorget and with a row of flat-headed rivets, pivoted bluntly-pointed visor with two vision and six rectangular ventilation slits, three small pierced holes above on both sides, and cusped lower border, gorget of four plates front and rear, hinged together and secured by a catch on the right, the top plates each with turned and roped border, rounded breast-plate with central fluting and bold roped turn at the top and arms, fauld of two plates and tasset of five upward lapping plates each, the lower plates both embossed with a double volute, back-plate with shaped culet embossed with a pair of lines, fully articulated arm defences with embossed vambrances and mitten gauntlets (one thumb-defence missing), the former each with riveted haute-pieces, circular besagew drawn-up to a blunt point centred on a recessed turned border followed by a row of rivets, full leg harness detachable at the knee, poleyns each with side-wing embossed with a spray, greaves hinged together and with 'bear paw' sabatons both of eight overlapping lames, the main edges turned and roped and with dome-headed rivets throughout (some surface rust in places); together with a two-hand sword in German 16th century style, with broad blade of flattened hexagonal section, waisted ricasso, guard comprising symmetrical side-rings, straight quillons with button terminals, cord-bound wooden grip, and stopper-shaped pommel cut with a spiral line and with a domed fluted top (2)
