With swamped two-stage barrels each turned at the girdle, breeches each signed in capitals and engraved with a shell along the tapering top flat, a chiselled scallop shell beyond, foliate engraved tangs, rounded locks each signed in capitals and chiselled with a pair of foliate scrolls at the tail, cocks (broken and crudely repaired) each chiselled with foliage, the retaining screws engraved en suite, figured full stocks (one fore-end split and repaired along one side at the muzzle, one butt with old split) each carved with a shell around the tang and with a foliate terminal behind the tail of the lock and side-flat, steel mounts chiselled in low relief and comprising pierced foliate side-plates each centred on a swept cartouche, vacant escutcheons en suite and each above a later mount for a shoulder-stock, spurred pommels each with domed cap decorated with a flower-head centred on a border of linked scallop shells, border engraved trigger-guards each with scallop shell finial and decorated with a flower-head in a recessed panel on the bow, engraved and faceted ramrod-pipes, scroll triggers, and original steel-capped ramrods, one with worm (the other slightly incomplete, some old wear and rust patination overall), London proof marks and Foreigner's mark (2)

William Trelawny was apprenticed to Joseph Dockwray in 1732 and although not recorded was turned over to Isaac Smith and found working for him by the Gunmakers' Company in 1734. His trade label gives his address as 'at the cross Guns Corner of Hanover Street, Long Acre' where he is recorded between 1742 and his retirement in 1746. A sporting gun by him is in the Kremlin, Moscow (inv. no. 8047)
