A 20-Bore Flintlock Silver-Mounted Turn-Off Pistol
By W. Turvey, London, Mid-18th Century, Indistinct Silver Maker's Mark

With three-stage cannon barrel, the breech re-engraved 'W. Turvey' along the top, and 'LONDON' beneath the steel-spring, waisted border engraved tang decorated with foliage, border engraved action, cock (minor chip) and steel, plain trigger-guard, moulded figured rounded swelling butt carved with a scallop shell behind the tang, cast and chased mounts comprising pierced trophy of arms side-plate, vacant foliate escutcheon surmounted by a shell, and grotesque-mask butt-cap with a further mask on the tang (some wear and old pitting), London proof marks and Turvey's barrelsmith's mark; together with a box-lock turn-off pistol in poor condition (top of cock, steel and butt replaced)(2)
