A rare Samoilov silver Butterfield-type dial, Russian or French, late 18th century,

signed in Cyrillic, octagonal dial with inset compass well, jewelled compass needle, hinged gnomon with leaf scroll decoration and bird pointer, two chapter rings with Roman and Arabic numerals, the reverse with list of twenty two Russian towns and latitudes, in original fitted red leather case, when closed 0.7 x 5.1 x 6.3cm (1/2 x 2 x 2 1/4in), the case 1.8 x 5.8 x 7.2cm (3/4 x 2 1/4 x 2 3/4in)
