Provenance
Gifted by the artist to the present owner.
The Autumn of 2001 was a period of reflection for Jack Vettriano. An exhibition was scheduled to be held at the The International Art & Design Fair September 2001. The location was to be 7th Regiment Armory, Park Avenue at 67th Street, New York City. Unfortunately, the exhibition ended up being cancelled due to the events of September 11th that year. Therefore, Vettriano remained in the UK, with a gap in his schedule and contemplating the effects of the dramatic global events.
Vettriano gifted this study to the present owner (who was an academic with an interest was in the careers of self-taught artists). Vettriano had mentioned he added the wall lights as a nod to Francis Bacon. The present work has never been viewed in public before.
This format of self portrait, with the artist sitting cross-legged on the floor, was one that he revisited the following year. A larger version dated 2002, was shown in the exhibition Jack Vettriano - The Early Years (Kirkcaldy Galleries 2022, number 56), but instead of the wall lights, depicted one of his own paintings.
