Vettriano was raised in the mining community of Methilhill, Fife, in 1950s. His family were not the poorest family in town, but money was a constant source of worry. Vettriano often depicted the lives of working-class people in his early work, enjoying the free-time; socialising, gambling or attending the dancehalls. Some scenes are more ambiguous than others. There is a narrative which invites you to continue the story.
The Challenge is a good example of Vettriano's early work that depicts a snapshot in time. It provokes a reaction and urges the viewer to create their own narrative.
