Provenance
Private collection, UK; thence by descent to the present owner.

During the early 1880s, while training in Paris under Carolus Duran, Farquharson was advised to visit the Fontainebleau forest to practice painting en plein air. Immersing himself in his surroundings came naturally and this experience would have a profound influence on his work. It awoke a desire to capture the drama in rural life and the ever-changing conditions on his home estate in Aberdeenshire. Later in his career, he continued this approach, travelling around his estate at Finzean in Royal Deeside with several mobile painting huts equipped with stoves.
