Maurice Clarke (British, 1875-1963)

A long day - a black Spaniel at rest
signed and dated 'MAURICE CLARKE/1901.' (lower right)
oil on canvas
24 x 31cm (9 7/16 x 12 3/16in).

Footnotes

An oil on canvas of a recumbent black dog upon a silk draped chair attendant by his masters riding gloves and crop. This composition of 1901 is very similar to that of Clarke's contemporary Frederick Hall (English 1860-1948), also a recumbent Cavalier King Charles Spaniel by his masters gloves. (See The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel: A Tribute in Art by Barbara Garnett-Wilson and Roy A. Wilson).

Clarke exhibited profusely, including 4 works at the Royal Society of Artists in Birmingham; 2 at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters; 11 at the Royal Academy; and twice at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours. He was the assistant Art Master at Harrow School (1902-1909), leaving for Repton (1909-1922), then returning to Harrow (1922-1936) as Art Master.
