Footnotes

The Maltese is an ancient breed and was enjoyed for its beauty and companionship and was the chosen breed to royalty and the landed gentry. Although the sitter in the present work is not royalty she was a famous beauty of her time.

The original painting upon which this is based is illustrated on page 218 of the Dog Painting: A Social History of the Dog in Art by William Secord.
