This evocative group of items offers a vivid glimpse into the life and early career of Marianne Faithfull. From a charmingly direct telegram sent by her manager, Tony Calder, reading "Where on earth are you?" to records of her elocution lessons and two well-travelled passports bearing stamps from Australia, Japan and the United States, the collection encapsulates the restless energy and international reach of Faithfull's career.
The telegram is of particular significance, dating from the pivotal year in which Faithfull was first "discovered" by Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham. Tony Calder was the business partner of Andrew Loog Oldham, the impresario and music manager who discovered Marianne. After the release of her first two singles, Calder took over as Marianne's manager in 1965 and produced two of her biggest 60's hits 'Come and Stay With Me' and 'This Little Bird'. Calder worked his pop acts hard with often punishing work schedules as Marianne related in her autobiography Faithfull (1994). This telegram provides a link to that formative moment when a young Marianne Faithfull began her ascent to stardom, under Calder's early guidance.
Another highlight is the dalmatian pedigree certificate. Marianne had a pet dalmatian called Sara Bingley who appeared with her in many promotional images taken in the sixties. The Faithfull family acquired the dog from the family of Anthony Powell, one of the students at the local boys school Leighton Park, who appeared with Marianne in joint school productions of plays and musicals alongside the girls from St Joseph's Convent. Marianne was photographed with Sara and her schoolfriends at home in Reading in 1964.
