N.B.
The present work was likely painted in the 1860s, during which period Dupré favored depictions of rustic, isolated rural scenes with thick brushstrokes and a subdued palette. This work likely served as a sketch for Village dans la Nuit in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam (SK-A-2888, Aubrun no. 363), which depicts the same scene in a larger format and with a few compositional differences.
