The present work is the original cover illustration for the 1946 novel by Southern Gothic writer Carson McCullers, titled The Member of the Wedding. This coming-of-age story centers around a twelve-year-old girl named Frankie who through the course of the novel is faced with questions of belonging as she searches for her place within her changing familial structure.
Leo and Diana Dillon met in 1954 while attending Parsons School of Design and married in 1957. The two initially pursued separate artistic careers in illustration before they began to collaborate on projects. They soon became recognized in the illustration world for their imaginative covers of science fiction, fantasy, and children's books. The pair have been recipients of numerous awards within illustrations including winning the Caldecott Medal in 1976 and 1977, receiving four New York Times Best Illustrated Awards, four Boston Globe/Horn Book Awards, two Coretta Scott King Awards and the Society of Illustrators Gold Medal.
