Footnotes

N.B.
Philip Barter was born in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, in 1939. After graduating high school in 1958 Barter joined the army and was stationed in Okinawa. Following his service, Barter moved to California where he studied under Alphonso Sosa before returning to Maine and settling in Franklin, where he remained for the rest of his life. Barter married his wife Priscilla in 1972 and together they raised seven children. To support his growing family, Barter worked as a fisherman, clam digger, and carpenter, while Priscilla started a woolen craft business, creating rugs, hats, and neckties (many sold at L.L. Bean). Soon Barter was able to take up painting full time and in 1992 he received a retrospective at Bates College. Barter's work has been shown in major museums and collections world-wide, and can be seen exhibited in galleries in and around Maine. His works can be found in the major collections of the Farnsworth Museum of Art, the Portland Museum of Art, and the Bates College Museum of Art.
