Footnotes

N.B.
Mitchell Siporin was born to immigrant parents whose beliefs in social justice movements had a direct impact on Siporin's world view and art. After studying at the Art Institute of Chicago, Siporin began experiencing success as a freelance illustrator and cartoonist, where his work revealed his interest in the labor movement. It was during this time that Siporin received notoriety for his series of twenty-five pen-and-ink drawings related to the 1886 Haymarket Riot. He was later appointed to the Illinois Art Project of the WPA in the mid-1930s and would become one of the most prolific muralists in the Midwest. His mural for the post office in St. Louis, Missouri, titled Discovery and Colonization, was the largest commission awarded by the government. In 1951 Siporin founded the art department at Brandeis University, and went on to teach at the university for twenty-five years.
