N.B.
A native of Greenville, Mississippi, Valerie Jaudon's first one-person exhibition was at the Holly Solomon Gallery in New York, in 1977. Since then, she has exhibited widely, both in the US and Europe. An important figure in the development of post-Minimal abstraction, she is probably best known as being one of the earliest members of the Pattern and Decoration movement. Her intricately patterned work, influenced by various cultures, from Celtic to Islamic, challenges the perception of 'decorative' as purely feminine. Jaudon's canvases are composed of strong, precise lines, juxtaposed with vigorous, thickly applied paint, and bands of raw canvas, creating visual puzzles for the viewer to decipher.
