Sam Stetson was born in Louisville, Kentucky, and was recognized as a gifted artist from an early age. At the age of fifteen, Stetson was sent to study at the Chicago Art Institute and at the age of 18 went on to become a teacher at the school. Stetson continued to develop his skill, going to Paris to study under André Lhote and Fernand Léger and to Germany to study under the Bauhaus. Upon his return to the US, Stetson worked with Hans Hoffman, David Karfunkel, and Samuel Marcus Adler in New York. He supported himself as an illustrator, poster designer, and portraitist working under major Hollywood studios to paint the portraits of famous actors and musicians.

Sam Stetson exhibited widely throughout his career in both group and solo shows including at the Karilon Gallery, Provincetown; the Provincetown Art Associations; the New Canaan Art Association; Greer Galleries, New York; Salmagundi Club, New York; Bezalel in Jerusalem; and the Collector's Art Gallery in Miami. His works are held in public and private collections across Houston, Dallas, Mexico City and Europe.
