N.B.
Painter and poet Walasse Ting was born in Wuxi, China, and began his career in Paris in the 1950s. He was closely involved in the Parisian avant-garde movement of the period, associating with artists like Karel Appel, Pierre Alechinsky, and others in the CoBrA group. In 1957 he moved to New York, where his work shifted from primarily abstraction into a mixture of abstract expressionism, figuratism, and Chinese brushwork. His paintings are bright, expressive, and animated, drawing both from the trends of postwar Western painting and the long history of Asian technique. The present work is an explosion of color and form, reminiscent of the series of abstract paintings that Ting and Alechinsky collaboratively produced in the 1960s.
