Footnotes
N.B.
There are various clippings from Francis Cotes Complete Edition by Edward Mead Johnson attached to the backing.
A letter attached to the backing describes the frame: 'This beautiful frame is a Georgian Regence Portrait frame and has a spandrel circle opening giving the portrait a look through porthole effect. The spandrel has the rare Sunray corner ornaments denoting energy or source. This is a rare and valuable frame - even tho it is a replica of a solid wood carved type made 75 or 100 years earlier. Its easy to date this frame as being made in the 1st quarter or 1st half of the 19th century - we know this by the fact that the ornaments on this frame are made from composition (or compo) and not carved as the earlier frames were before 1800. It is a perfect frame on this fine portrait. D.P. Dow 1987...'
