Note
Edgar Frederick Luckenbach (1868-1943) was a steamship builder in New York City, commissioning several vessels named for himself and family members. The portrait may depict the oceangoing tugboat Edgar F. Luckenbach, which sank after a collision with the Clyde Line freight ship Pawnee in New York Harbor on 28 January 1908. Another two-masted tugboat named Edgar F. Luckenbach was built in 1891 and became the USS Cherokee upon her purchase by the US Navy 1917. She sank in a storm near Fenwick Island, Delaware, the following year.
