Fancy-painted Scroll-cut Wooden Valance
North America, c. 1835
Milled quarter-inch boards with foliate scrolls sawn into top and stencil-painted with conforming floral sprays flanking a bowl of fruit, gilded applied molding at square ends and bottom edge framing symmetrical stencil-painted fruit bowl and leaf motifs, all on dark green-painted ground, the original brackets removed to conjoin two individual valances at center and later wooden brackets for mounting with curtain rod added to opposite ends, wd. 82, dp. 4 1/2, ht. 14 in.
