Banjo Clock Depicting Battle of Constitution & Guerriere
America, c. 1825
Mahogany and pine case with repaired brass 8-day weight-driven movement. Glazed brass porthole door opens over dial with steel hands and enameled sheet iron face, over throat flanked by brass side arms centering a trapezoidal reverse-painted glass panel depicting an eagle over banner inscribed "PATENT" at base, surrounded by a blocked and bead-molded gilt frame, the same surrounding bottom tablet reverse-painted with War of 1812 naval battle scene, titled "CONSTITUTION & GUERRIERE", this panel opening onto case weight compartment, label of N.E. Aldrich Clock Repair in Marblehead, Massachusetts affixed to interior, the bottom continuing to molded bracket with ball turnings under a deep cornice and terminating in a large acorn pendant, (restoration, missing finial)
