Note
Frank Vining Smith was born in Whitman, Massachusetts and worked as a newspaper illustrator and camouflage artist during WWI, before moving to Hingham, Massachusetts and concentrating on Maritime art. He spent time in the Hawaii and the Pacific, where he likely painted - or was inspired to paint - The Sovereign of the Seas off Diamond Head. His former home in Hingham was reported to contain a recently discovered mural of a Polynesian scene, believed to have been painted by Smith in recollection of this time in his life.

The Sovereign of the Seas was built by Donald McKay of East Boston, Massachusetts, and launched in 1852. She was the first ship to travel more than 400 nautical miles in 24 hours and broke the record for fastest transit from Honolulu, Hawaii, to New York City.
