Framed Continental Cross-stitch Sampler
The Netherlands, 1786
Plain-woven linen textile worked in silk threads, the top register containing three rows of alphabets and numbers, as well as the date 1786, in red, above open space arranged with ten vignettes, including a monogrammed floral wreath and a ship complete with figurehead and rudder flying Dutch flags, the bottom corners anchored by symmetrical figural groups of the Spies of Canaan on the left, Adam and Ever at right, all surrounded by narrow chain- and cross-stitched line borders, not examined outside of bird's eye maple frame with conservation glass.
