Framed Cross-stitch Sampler
signed Susannah Dixon, England, 1840
Fine plain-weave textile worked in counted-thread and cross stitches, centering a block of verse on original sin above the bold signature "SUSANNAH DIXON 1840" wrought in pulled-thread stitches, the text surrounded by symmetrical vignettes of flowers, birds, diamonds, and an eight-pointed star, all over a bottom register depicting a large brick house flanked by fenced yards, the edges worked in an intricate strawberry vine border, mounted in later glazed frame.
