Provenance
Hannah Shuttleworth Riley (1820-92) was born in England and married fellow expatriate Benjamin F. Riley (1821-1901), a trained weaver. The family lived and worked in the Manayunk district of Philadelphia, where textile mills proliferated in the mid-nineteenth century. The sampler, completed the year before Shuttleworth's marriage in 1843, descended to consignor through their daughter Mary Jane Riley Ewing (1849-1922) and granddaughter Eva Ewing Day (1876-1942).
