Empire Match-Veneered Mahogany and White Pine Chest of Drawers
retailed by Adams & North, Lowell, Massachusetts, c. 1850
The top fitted with a shallow case of dovetailed split drawers, one having maple stretchers instead of pine, the two-board mahogany top rounded at corners to conform with four quarter-engaged stiles, each milled with reeded, palmette, stacked ring, and patterned inlay decoration, mounted over round tenons of four baluster-turned maple feet with steel and hardwood swivel glides, the back and bottom of case fully enclosed with pine boards, 109cm wide, 25cm deep, 104cm high (43 1/4in wide, 10 3/4in deep, 41 3/4in high).

Note
The backboard is inscribed "Adams & North / Lowell / Mass" in white chalk. Adams & North dealt in "Carpets, Feathers, Mattresses, and every description of Cabinet Furniture" at "the Old Stand" on the corner of Central and William Street, from circa 1844 until 1857, when their warehouse was destroyed by fire.
