Chippendale Walnut and Pine Desk and Bookcase
possibly Lancaster, Pennsylvania, c. 1775
In two parts, the upper case surmounted by a broken pediment with deep cornice terminating in elaborate carved and punch-decorated rosettes, flanking a shaped tympanum with applied chrysanthemum and vine carving, all overhanging the tall and narrow dovetailed bookcase with two joined panel doors embellished with mullions in a Gothic arch and quatrefoil design, the interior drilled for installing adjustable shelves (not included), enclosed with dovetailed bottom and four horizontal backboards; the bookcase resting inside molding applied to top of a slant-lid desk with cleats mitered to single-board front, which opens on square hinges to reveal an interior centering a fine blocked and shell-carved prospect door covering a recessed compartment with two valanced pigeonholes over two small drawers, an arrangement repeated with figured walnut and poplar drawers at both sides of the flanking column-carved document drawers, the open lid supported by lopers flanking the first of four graduated drawers with fronts thumb-molded on three sides, separated by full dustboards inserted in dados on interior sides, enclosed with full bottom and five vertical backboards, 109cm wide, 55cm deep, 256cm high (43in wide, 22 5/8in deep, 101 1/2in high).
