Fine Mahogany Tall Case Clock
signed Edward Spalding (1732-85), Providence, Rhode Island, 18th century and later
Eight-day, weight-driven striking bell mechanism retaining original iron plates and wooden drums, mounted behind a milled sheet brass dial with arched top centering an applied boss engraved "E. Spalding / PROVIDENCE" between applied cast metal brackets in Baroque style similar to spandrel ornaments below, which surround a silvered chapter ring containing two winding arbors and mounted with pierced steel second and minute hands; enclosed by a pedimented mahogany hood with molded keystone finial plinth above an arched tablet dial door, hinged between blocked and turned freestanding columns, the straight sides installed with paint-decorated arched sidelights and abutting molded pilasters at rear edge; all resting on deep scotia molding applied to the top of a joined mahogany waist section, whose front corners feature recessed quarter columns and a single-board arched tablet pendulum door, over inverted scotia molding applied to square base section, with shorter quarter columns at front corners flanking a single flame mahogany panel, all raised on tall, straight bracket feet with ogee returns; includes two weights, pendulum, door key, and winder, 48cm wide, 25cm deep, 223cm high (19 1/2in wide, 10 3/4in deep, 88 1/2in high).
