Rare Chippendale Mahogany Armchair
Finely carved and shaped crest, splat, and arm supports over seat frame with double-pinned through tenons; the needlepoint seat cover signed "CKS 1934" is stretched over a plywood frame, 66cm wide, 68cm deep, 106cm high (26 5/8in wide, 27 1/2in deep, 42 1/2in high). Seat ht. to rail, 16 5/8 in.

The shaped floral motif centering broad, scroll-eared crest rail, has been identified as a regional characteristic of Pennsylvania furniture. The armchair is referred to in comparison with a side chair illustrated in Furniture and Silver by American Master Craftsmen of Colonial and Early Federal Times (New York: American Art Association, 1931), cat. no. 377.
