Framed Silk and Linen Sampler
signed Sarah Thompson, near Boston, Massachusetts, c. 1800
Fine plain-woven linen canvas worked in variously plied blue, green, pink, yellow, and gold silk threads, the composition of an arched trellis and patterned grid relating to samplers made in the western suburbs of Boston at the turn of the 19th century, each of the eighteen squares at the bottom containing a distinct darning or canvaswork technique, including Hungarian, Milanese, Florentine, Byzantine, and drawn thread stitches, the piece retaining warm tones and uniform patina throughout, not examined outside of cherry frame with conservation glass.
