Red-stained Tall Case Clock

clockworks by James Wilson, Birmingham, England; case from Newcastle, Maine, c. 1830
Eight-day, weight-driven striking bell movement, painted sheet iron dial with seconds hand and calendar wheel, the illustrated moon phase dial impressed "WILSON BIR" and iron plate facing movement signed "WILSON" on reverse, the conforming case with brass-mounted column decoration, includes two weights, pendulum, winding key, door key, and three brass finials, including finial, 53cm wide, 25cm deep, 238cm high (21 1/2in wide, 10 1/2in deep, 94in high).

Provenance Note
Originally owned by Henry Chamberlain (1796-1891) of Bristol, Maine. A typewritten label affixed to inside of waist door reads: "Henry Chamberlain Clock / Originally owned by a sea captain who had a commission to buy ten tall clocks in Birmingham, England. The clock was given to this sea captain as his commission for obtaining the ten clocks, and the clock left by Varney Fossett a few years ago to Winifred Harrington was one of the same lot. / Information furnished by Mrs. Chamberlain."

The waist door and case interior also retain signatures of repairmen dated 1840-1947, including the Bristol watchmaker James R. Crooker (1802-57) and Bowdoinham carpenter-joiner William T. Salie (1836-1910).
