A MARTIALLY MARKED COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY REVOLVER,
1882.

Serial number 83957, likely 44-40 caliber (caliber markings polished away), re-blued barrel, cylinder and grip frame, barrel marked "COLT'S PT. F. A. MFG Co HARTFORD CT U.S.A." and the underside "D.F.C." and "P"; the frame marked "PAT.SEPT.19.1871/ " JULY.2.-72/ " JAN.19.-75" and "U.S." and "D.F.C." near the serial number; cylinder has matching serial number and is marked "D.F.C." and "P"; walnut grip with 1882 dated "JEG" cartouche on the left side and "DFC" cartouche on the right side, the underside also marked "D.F.C."; all visible serial numbers match including the barrel.
Barrel lg. 7 1/2, overall lg. 12 7/8 in.

Condition: Re-blued, Colt markings on the barrel are legible, but caliber marking is polished away, inspector's marks in the metal are strong, case colors are strong, grip has minor wear and blemishes, cartouche on the left side is strong, cartouche on the right side is week; action functions properly.

"D.F.C." is the mark of Colt sub-inspector David F. Clark who inspected over 13,000 Colt firearms between 1880-1887.

"JEG" is the mark of U.S. Army Captain John E. Greer who inspected and accepted Colt Single Action Army revolvers on behalf of the Ordnance Department between 1882-1884.
