A MARTIALLY MARKED 1890s REFURBISHED COLT SINGLE ACTION "ARTILLERY" REVOLVER,
1873/1895.

Frame serial number 912, .45 Colt caliber, the barrel shortened to 5 1/2 in. and marked on the top "COLT'S PT.F.A.MFG.Co.HARTFORD.CT.U.S.A." and on the underside with "P" proof mark and "J.T.C." for inspector John T. Cleveland; bullseye ejector rod head, ejector housing marked "C" at the front; framed marked on the left side "PAT.SEPT.19,1871/PAT.JULY.2,1872" and "US" with standard US cavalry hammer with elongated deep cross hatched spur and cone shaped firing pin; the cylinder with serial number 8849 and marked with "P" proof mark, and "A" sub-inspector's mark, the rear face of the cylinder marked "1" and the loading gated marked "203"; trigger guard with serial number 18456 and with sub-inspector's mark "J"; the grip frame with serial number 2458 and sub-inspector's mark "A"; the walnut grip has no visible trace of inspector's marks.
Overall lg. 11 in.

Condition: Barrel bluing is transitioning to brown but remains quite evident overall, markings are strong; frame retains most of its case coloring with thinning on the highest areas of the breech and right side in the area that would be touched by the trigger finger; cylinder bluing is quite strong and starting to transition toward brown, with thinning on the sharp edges and a turn line, markings are all legible; trigger guard bluing remains on the forward part with the serial number but the remainder is toned to gray; grip frame retains bluing at the top but the remainder is toned to gray/brown; grip has old gouges on the left side and the bottom is somewhat battered; action is strong and functions properly, bore is clean and rifling is sharp.
