A FIRST YEAR OF PRODUCTION SPRINGFIELD U.S. MODEL 1873 TRAPDOOR RIFLE AND BAYONET,
1873.

Serial number 706, .45-70 caliber, round barrel with adjustable rear sight, loading door marked "MODEL/1873" over an eagle's head and crossed sword and "U.S."; flat lock plate marked with a spread wing eagle and "U.S./SPRINGFIELD"; walnut stock; steel furniture and bands, the butt plate marked "36/SJC," with steel rammer; locking ring socket bayonet marked "U.S." on the blade.
Barrel lg. 29 1/2 in., overall lg. 49 in.

Condition: Barrel toned to brown and with scattered light dings; lock toned to mottled gray; stock shows wear from use including numerous dents, scratches and gouges; furniture toned to mottled brown; bore is mostly bright with scattered surface oxidation and strong rifling, action functions properly; bayonet has light gray toning and associated very light pitting.
