A U.S. MODEL 1870 SPRINGFIELD "TRAPDOOR" RIFLE,
1870-73.

Serial number 4131, .50 caliber, round barrel with adjustable rear sight and marked with a serial number at the breech, loading door marked "1870" over eagle's head, crossed arrows and "U.S."; flat lock plate marked "1863" on the rounded tail and with a spread wing eagle and "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" in front of the cock; walnut stock, the left side of the butt marked "7"; steel furniture and bands, the butt plate marked "US", no rammer.
Barrel lg. 32 1/2 in., overall lg. 52 in.

Condition: Barrel is mostly cleaned bright, loading door toned to mottled brown; lock toned to mottled brown; stock has scattered dings, dents, scratches and gouges; furniture is cleaned bright and has scattered minor pitting; bright bore with sharp rifling, action functions properly, missing rammer.
