A U.S GOULDING & COMPANY RIFLE BAYONET,
New York, c. 1861.

The brass handle with ring texture and spring retaining clip, cross guard with bulbous quillons; straight double edge blade marked "GOULDING & CO/NEW YORK" near the tip; with small section of scabbard having the upper mount engraved "E. Cotty."
Blade lg. 23 3/8, overall lg. 27 7/8 in.

Condition: Brass toned to deep yellow, cross guard is loose; blade as areas of gray mottling and areas of surface oxidation, tip is blunt; fragmentary scabbard.

E. Cotty apparently served in the 84th New York Infantry Regiment during the Civil War.
