A POSSIBLE U.S. MODEL 1842 MUSKET BAYONET,
mid-19th century.

The socket with locking ring and knuckle bow integrally forged with the yataghan single-edge blade with false edge at the tip and single wide fuller the back of the blade with deep groove, unmarked.
Blade lg. 17 1/2, overall lg. 20 1/8 in.

Condition: Bayonet is mostly bright with scattered light gray toning and associated light pitting.

Hardin offers little evidence for describing the bayonet as the U.S. Model 1842 except for the fact that it apparently fits the gun perfectly. See Albert N. Hardin, Jr. The American Bayonet 1776-1964 (Pennsauken, NJ, 1964/87), No. 105, pp. 129-30.
