Note
The October 28-29, 1863, Battle of Wauhatchie was one of only a handful of nighttime battles during the Civil War. The Union victory enabled Federal supply routes to Chattanooga, TN, to remain open during its siege and helped the Union gain an advantage prior to the Battles of Chattanooga in November.
The sword was taken by Corporal Daniel N. Cline, Company B, 137th New York State Volunteers. Cline served between 1862-65 and was discharged due to injuries incurred while serving.
