A FINE CENTRAL ITALIAN ROMAN-LOCK BELT PISTOL,
mid-18th century.

13 3/8 in., .56 caliber octagon to round barrel; finely foliate scroll engraved miquelet-style lock, the inside of the plate with engraved initials "BM"; finely figured walnut stock with carved plateaus around the lock mortice, side plate, breech plug tang and along the rammer channel; brass furniture includes a butt cap with long ears decorated with foliate scrolls and figural mask, openwork crown and scroll thumb piece, trigger guard with molded and engraved leaf finial and mask on the trigger guard bow, openwork foliate scroll side plate, elaborately faceted rammer pipes and brass nose band, wood rammer with horn tip.
Overall lg. 19 1/2 in.

Condition: Barrel toned to light mottled gray, lock toned to gray, springs are intact and strong but does not engage at full-cock position and needs assistance to release from half-cock position; stock has scattered dings, dents and scratches, and a small wood loss at the butt cap.
