Footnotes
Provenance:
Schefler Collection, New York, acquired between 1969-2000.
Two similar examples from the Ray Winfield Smith and Jerome Strauss Collections are preserved in The Corning Museum of Glass (D.B. Whitehouse, Roman Glass in The Corning Museum of Glass. Volume One, The Corning Museum of Glass, Corning, 1997, pp. 107-8, nos. 161-2). While examples from the 1st Century A.D. may bear the name of the glass maker (Artas or Neikon) impressed by tongs while flattening the handles, those on this example just bear the marks of patterned or textured tongs.
