Provenance:
with Mansour Gallery, London.
Schefler Collection, New York, acquired from the above, 17 July 1989.
This type of beaker can be found in various sizes in many areas of the former Roman Empire but this one is a more unusual variant in having three-tiered dropped-shaped bosses or "lotus buds" alternating with bosses arranged in quincunx over five rows. This arrangement may also be found on a fragment from Aquileia in north Italy (L. Mandruzzato A. Marcante (eds), Vetri Antichi del Museo Archeologico Nazionale de Aquileia. Il vasellame da mensa, Vol. 2, Corpus delle collezioni del vetro nel Friuli Venezia Giulia (Comitato Nazionale Italiano dell' AIHV), 2005, p. 58, no. 6), and on two intact examples from Golgoi in Cyprus in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge and The Constable-Maxwell Collection, (Sotheby Parke Bernet, The Constable-Maxwell Collection of Ancient Glass, 4-5 June 1979, p. 57, lot 79).
